Fractionburgers
Fractions will be one of our last math outcomes. We have one of my all time favorite educational tools to help children really understand the concepts needed for this subject. Pictured to the left, fraction burgers are squishy foam rubber slices of a hamburger bun, meat and all the toppings. Each layer is sliced up into a specific fraction: halves, through twelfes. So, they can stack up different fractions and actually see if they are equal or not. They’re also wonderful for helping children understand the function of the top number (numerator) and the bottom number (denominator).
Today, we had a big argument about whether you could actually have 11 tenths or not. I was able to show them that you could, what it would look like and what the implications of them would be. Kids love these manipulatives and they do a wonderful job of helping me teach.
